Philosophy 101, Summer Term 2: 2017, MW 10-1, Buchanan D322
Instructor: Richard Sandlin ([email protected])
Office Hours: TBD
Philosophy challenges us to ask fundamental questions and answer them in critical ways. At some point in our lives, all of us engage in the practice of philosophy. This course will allow us to practice philosophy in a systematic way. The course is structured around certain fundamental problems rather than as a journey through the history of philosophy. By the end of the course, students will have a greater understanding of certain core philosophical problems and further refinement of their critical reading, writing and discussion skills. Philosophy 101 introduces philosophy by way of questions in metaphysics (what is real?) and epistemology (what can we know?).Though we will spend some time on a few ethical issues, students more interested in questions of ethics, political philosophy and aesthetics should consider registering for Philosophy 102.
